Zìrán · The Self-So

The self you don't have to build

We spend our lives trying to become someone more polished, more impressive, more ourselves. But the self-so cannot be built or performed, and you meet it only when you stop trying.

Three minute read

We are handed a project early, and the project is ourselves. Become someone. Build a personality, a presence, a brand. Be more polished, more interesting, more impressive, a better edited version of you. We work on the self the way we would work on anything we mean to improve, and we measure the work by how it lands on other people.

The Tao Te Ching points the other way, with one strange and beautiful word. Ziran. It is two characters, self and so. So of itself. What a thing is when nothing is making it be anything. Lao Tzu wrote that the earth takes after the sky, the sky takes after the Way, and the Way itself takes after ziran. The highest thing there is models itself on the simply, unforcedly so.

Nothing in the whole order of things is trying to be anything.

Look anywhere but at people. A bird does not try to be a bird. A cat is entirely a cat and has never once apologized for it. The mountain is not trying to impress you, which is precisely why it does. Only one creature on earth rehearses itself. Only one runs a second self that stands a little apart and watches the first one perform, editing, adjusting, checking the room for how it is going over.

You learned, somewhere, to watch yourself live.

It is exhausting, and worse, it does not even work. We rehearse the version of ourselves to carry into the room, then narrate ourselves through it so closely that we are barely in the room at all. And the trap closes here. You cannot fix this by trying to be natural. Act natural is the most unnatural instruction in any language. Try to be spontaneous and you have already failed, because the trying is the very thing the self-so does not do.

You cannot try to be natural. The trying is the unnatural part.

So ziran is not one more thing to add to yourself. It is what is left when you stop adding. Think of the times you have felt most like yourself. They were not the times you performed yourself well. They were the times you forgot to, lost in the work, deep in a conversation, absorbed in something until the watcher went quiet and there was no one left managing how you came across. You were not being natural in those moments. You had simply stopped being anything else.

You do not need to become more yourself. There is no more yourself to become. Underneath the editing and the managing and the careful presentation, the unforced thing has been there the whole time, waiting for you to stop drowning it out. The work was never to build it. The work is to quiet everything you stacked on top of it.

You do not have to become yourself.

You only have to stop being everything you are not.
